Trip Options and Logistics:

We offer different options for our unguided river float hunting trips for Alaska Yukon Moose. The shorter ones average 40 plus river miles and a longer, more popular 110-mile river float. The longer trip averages approximately 34 hours of actual floating time, depending on water levels. While the rivers are rated Class I, rafting experience is recommended.

Our longest float trip commences near the river system’s headwaters and all of the float trips will conclude at our main base camp, which features an extended, deep, and straight section of the river suitable for safe float plane landings and  more importantly, long enough to take out a full load of men, equipment, moose meat and antlers.

We provide river maps with marked take-out locations and GPS coordinates. Our established entry/exit strip ensures efficient access to hunt and fish this river system, also complying with Alaska State Hunting Game Regulations requiring exit within GMU 19 when hunting for moose. The remote location and significant travel expenses contribute to the exclusivity of our hunting areas. The first and last days of the trip are dedicated to air charter flights between Anchorage and in the field outfitting point.

What Are The Best Methods To Hunt Moose On A Float Hunt?

It is important to understand that successful moose float hunting typically involves taking your time and making campsites in only a few locations, actively hunting the surrounding areas using raking, bull grunts and cow moaning calling techniques. During moose season the days average 12 hours of daylight so you can cover the distance of our longest float hunting trip in less than 3 days.

Constant awareness of signs of where bull moose have been raking the brush along the riverbank when floating and around your campsites is important. Stopping often and spending some time calling and raking as you are floating to another campsite. Patience and perseverance are essential  for a successful moose hunt. The moose are there and it may take time to call a bull in to harvest.

Remote Hunts Mean Less Hunters and More Success

Through diligent effort, we have established and maintained the only landing strip for float plane access within the upper section of this remote river system within Game Management Unit 19. This has enabled our hunters to enjoy moose hunting without competition from other hunters.

Most rafting equipment, gear, tackle, and camping supplies are stored (cached) at our main river base camp during the off-season. This eliminates the expense of transporting equipment to and from the field annually, contributing to a more affordable unguided Alaskan moose hunting float trip. Hunting in these remote, lightly pressured areas significantly increases the opportunity for successful moose harvests.

The flight from Anchorage to the trip’s starting point is over two hours, with a similar return flight time. We utilize DHC-2 De-Havilland Beavers with wing-tip fuel tanks to ensure sufficient range for these extended flights.

Game Management and Hunting Strategy:

After a 12 year suspension, the “Intensive Predator Management Control Program” was reinstated in 2004. In the few GMU’s where it has been active, moose hunters have greatly benefited from the results. Resulting in an impressive big and small game recovery similar to the previous levels before it was stopped statewide in 1992. The reinstating of this program has helped to balance the predator to prey ratio once again which provides great moose hunting opportunities to harvest mature trophy-class Bulls.

We are very fortunate that our Guide Use Area is in GMU 19 and has been one of the few regions in the State of Alaska that has benefited from the advantages of this program since its conception in 2004. In the GMU’s it is active the reinstating of this program is helping to get Alaska’s wolf population to a more desirable predator to prey ratio again.

We have observed an impressive mature bull and cow moose population growth in recent years. Where implemented, they are currently bestowing additional steady and balanced Ungulate population growth. Fortunately, once again we are able to enjoy the sound benefits of these sensible and successful types of game management programs, which afford a favorable balance for all wildlife species and provide some great bull moose hunting as well.
